The art of living is the most sublime of all the arts when life is lived deeply and fully. But life cannot be lived deeply and fully without experiences, insights, and wisdom. Fortunately, life is full of experiences shared with other human beings, insights and learned from those experiences, and wisdom is acquired through the use of insights and the building of values which is the basic to human life. Without the basic values, nothing good, beautiful, and true can be perceived, nothing can save men from the harsh reality of life, and nothing can shield him from failure and rejection. It is only through the acquisition of wisdom and values that man finds an infinite capacity to discover a broad horizon, build relationships, develop interest, and acquire success.

Although values development starts in the home, much depends on our schools where the Filipino child enters at a tender age, develops into an impressionable teenager, and grows into a young adult. Through all these years, the responsibility of sharing experiences, of learning insights, and building wisdom and basic values rests on the shoulders of all his teachers. Our schools have this reckon with, and our teachers must be made aware of this great responsibility. If we are truly and sincerely concerned with our youth, and if we desire quality education for them, then let us teach them values that will help them live life deeply and fully.
What is a value?

The immediate and natural answer to this question is to say that value is the quality which involves appreciation or interest in an object. Appreciation involves feeling, and ultimately desires or tendencies underlying that feeling. Back of this feeling lie certain instincts presupposed by the desire and its satisfaction. When value gives satisfaction, it becomes a biological form. When value draws the use of reason to meet desire and aspiration and the required standard of satisfaction, the standpoint becomes philosophical which is the basis for logical human value. Several schools of thought hold that logic is the science of cognitive value and logicians say that truth is a positive value and error is its negative counterpart.

How are values classified?

There are three accepted ways of classifying values:
1. There are psychological values which are biological and genetics. They are functions of interest or desire connected with some fundamental instinct or tendency.
2. A more historical mode of classification have acquired institutional form in’our society, such as religious, moral, cognitive, political, economic, and aesthetic.
3. The third which has been called the axiological, accepts the trinity of the good, the beautiful and the true, to which it asks the higher unity of God. The ethical, the aesthetic and logical values are self- sufficient and co-ordinate in the sense that they are irreducible the one to the other.
