Table Talk: Why only former PGMA? PDF Print E-mail

What is happening to former President now incumbent Congress Representative Gloria Macapagal Arroyo is a two pronged approach, by the President. First, President PNoy wanted the Filipino people to know that he is fulfilling his campaign promise and reiterating his State of the Nation Address (SONA) to fight corruption as first in his agenda of governance. Second it is like personal in nature, for what reason, only the Aquino and the Macapagal Arroyo families know. You may agree or disagree with me but that is my observation.

Election in the Philippines, the  past, present and maybe in the future is indeed a breeding ground of corruption, bribery, murder and other related heinous crimes. What former PGMA did had been done by other past presidents, directly or indirectly. Not only presidents because the Philippines has a history of corruption on all elective positions from the President down to the Senate and Congress then to governors and mayors  even lately Comelec received electoral charges of fraud from the barangay level. With this information, only those elected officials who do not have luck on their side are caught and arrested. That holds true to former PGMA, because there are more corrupt elected officials who also plundered the people’s coffers who are still running loose up to the present.

We read in newspapers all sort of graft and corruption committed by elected officials, like huge commissions in the sale of government property, misuse of Internal Revenue Allotment (IRA) running by the million pesos, onerous construction contracts, overpricing of purchases from office supplies to equipment and vehicles, all in all by the billions of pesos but many of those involved are scot free. Worst, some are still doing it. Even the police and military establishments are not spared from this malady, but the corrupt police and military officials are still there.

Even the graft busting commission (PCGG} created by the government to run after erring government officials, some of their PCGG commissioners are also immersed in corruption and high stake gambling. To the majority of Filipinos, corruption is already a way of life. PNoy has a gargantuan task ahead of him and under his watch seemingly another anomaly that might lead to corruption is brewing in the provinces. There are so many unpalatable whispers going around in the municipalities, the Presidents “Pantawid” or 4Ps program is giving so many officials unexplained wealth.

Scoop: President Simeon Benigno Cojuangco Aquino III must also take care of the Mindanao cities and provinces in terms of delivery of public services through infrastructure projects and agricultural support, particularly in Zamboanga Peninsula and not only look after the welfare of the lawless elements and their families in Central Mindanao. We have more poverty stricken families in Zamboanga Peninsula and less corrupt elected government officials here.
