KAKAMPI MO ANG BATAS

BY Atty. BATAS MAURICIO

LIFE’S INSPIRATIONS: “… Has not the one God made you? You belong to him in body and spirit. And what does the one God seek? Godly offspring. So be on your guard, and do not be unfaithful to the wife of your youth…” (Malachi 2:15, the Holy Bible).

SPECTABLE OF SEPARATING SPOUSES AFFLICT GOV’T: The spectacle of a nasty separation between a high government official and his or her spouse seems to be getting more and more common these days. Either marital problems involving the high and the mighty are occurring more frequently now, or are getting to be publicized more and more daringly by those involved at present.

Whatever be the true state of affairs for husbands and wives occupying sensitive government positions, one thing can no longer be denied by what is happening around us—the Filipino family, whether of the rich and the powerful or of the poverty-stricken sectors of society, is under grave assault, and is being threatened with extinction.

The broken family is now getting to be the rule among many households in the country. More and more couples are finding it quite easy to separate from their spouses with the permissive society we live in right now, pathetically unmindful of the lifelong scars their separation will bring to their children.

CHILDREN OF SEPARATED PARENTS WILL SEPARATE, TOO: Indeed, children whose parents got separated from one another for any reason will also separate. In my years as a trial lawyer handling cases involving separated husbands and wives, I have always been a witness to the fact that children of separated parents are cursed to separate from their own spouses in the future.

I have always reminded couples trying to retain me as their lawyer so they could secure legal separation o an annulment of marriage to think first if they want their children to be separating from their own spouses when they grow up and start their own families.

I am surprised that when this possibility is raised to the separating couples, that somehow softens them up, making them easily amenable to finding a mutually acceptable solution that would enable their families to remain united, with the warring men and women becoming compelled to set aside their own personal interests to protect the interests of their children.

ADMONITIONS AGAINST DIVORCING SPOUSES: Indeed, wise men from the past have already written profusely about the need to preserve the unity of the family. I have read books which describe the marital union between man and woman as a union of their flesh and blood and even of their spirit. After marriage, the husband and the wife become one, and are no longer two.

As a result, there are very grave admonitions against divorcing spouses. One particularly strong warning says, a marriage is a union allowed by God to happen so that no man should be allowed to break up that union.

Any disobedience to this warning is to be met with misfortune—the prayers of the divorcing spouse will no longer be looked upon with favor, and would in fact no longer granted. In effect, any husband or wife separating from the spouse of his youth will become afflicted with curses, including the curses of sickness and death, and of disgrace and destruction.
