TODAY’S MANNA

BY Berlie G. Yap

The first hours of La Bella of its Monday yesterday weren’t so good. In just a span of, at least, one hour there were two shooting incidents which did take place in two separate places of the City, and both victims had immediately succumbed to the gunshots. Both news stories were pretty awful, considering that they happened in the first working day of the week and such did right away meet the Zamboangueño people on their rush hour time. Whew!

The shooting incidents were similarly perpetrated by the assailants, while their victims were driving their single motorcycles. Both shooters were also on a riding-in-tandem manner. Indeed, the incidents were pretty similar!Although the only difference: the former was alone in his vehicle while the latter was with two back-ride passengers with her. Based onto the initials reports of the police, the weapons used in the separate incidents were also both .45 caliber pistol.

No wonder that the victims died on the spot. Accordingly, the shooters of the incidents remained to be at large, at the writing of this column. The following are few of the details which Barangay eMedia was able to gather live yesterday morning—the first shooting took place in Tetuan and the victim was a chief engineer of a local boat, which route plies regularly to the South.

Whereas, the second shooting happened in San Roque; now the slain victim was a woman SAF office. Barangay eMedia’s field reporter partner Gino Franco Torres was there to cover the whole story live, yesterday morning. It seemed that the woman victim was shot in a close range angle, because it was just the victim who was deliberately hit by the shooter—meaning the back-ride passengers were left unharmed. One more, the assailant was noticeably a pretty sharper shooter.

In fact, one may presume a particular theory that probably the motive of the killing must be quite grave, due to the clean trail of the commission of the crime. Maybe the shooter had deep reasons why he personally killed the victim orit could also be possible that the shooter was a gun for hire and was only contracted by a principal. You know howLa Bella has that ample availability of professional killers, who could just be paid in as low as P5k.

According to Barangay eMedia’s reliable sources, it is how cheap a life’s cost nowadays in our streets, once any interested party may want to kill his enemy via a gun-for-hire contract. Hence, these two new additional unsolved crimes will add more to the headaches of our City police. For the record, since the entry of 2018 there now tens of shooting incidents in Zamboanga City and, if not all, most of them remain to be unsolved.

To make matters worse, it is something the candid puzzle of the general public if how these criminal elements can just easily carry along their guns with them, despite the ongoing martial law in Mindanao and the stricter policy of the local authorities against loose firearms in La Bella. Why do you think? Whew! Your guess is as good as of Barangay eMedia’s!

One lawyer remarked yesterday morning, while visiting Barangay eMedia when the twin incidents were covered by the station’s field reporters and news anchors, that if—referring to the SAF officer, a policeman is not anymore safe from any criminal mind in the City, how much more the ordinary civilians all over!

Folks, these are few of the realities which we have to face now and then, in our beautiful La Bella. But Barangay eMedia wishes to re-iterate that with regards to petty crimes in Zamboanga City, there are can only be two major usual reasons behind any homicide or murder, to wit: it is either connecting to the trade ofillegal drugs or instead to a personal vengeance of two fighting parties which may only end to killing each other.

If Barangay eMedia may quote our authorities’ monotonous own words, the shooting incidents yesterday might again be a remote one, and shall never fret so much the general public. Notwithstanding, the authorities cannot also blame the latter if such incidents will in any manner raise a level of concern and even to a degree of doubt, in their hearts, to the capabilities of the former—to really maintain the peace and order of Mi Ciudad.

“Wealth gained hastily will dwindle, but whoever gathers little by little will increase it. Hope deferred makes the heart sick, but a desire fulfilled is a tree of life. Whoever despises the word[e] brings destruction on himself, but he who reveres the commandment will be rewarded. The teaching of the wise is a fountain of life, that one may turn away from the snares of death.”’ (Prov. 13:11-14, ESV)
