Congratulations to the Zamboanga Funds For Little Kids (ZFLK) Foundation’s “Yellow Boat Project” for bagging the regional award from the 2011 Gawad Geny Lopez Jr. Bayaning Pilipino Awards. It gave a recognition for the people of this foundation whose aims is to improve the lives and give a better future not only for the kids but the whole community of Layag-Layag in Talon-Talon, Zamboanga City. The award was received by ZFLK founder Jay Jaboneta.
When Jaboneta went to Zamboanga City in 2010 he learned about the poor flight of the Layag-Layag children who have to swim in going to school with the risk of getting drown. Since the livelihood of the children’s parents is basically seaweed farming and fishing, their houses are located beyond seashore and among mangrove trees. If there is no high tide, the children have to walk through muddy and sticky low sea floor.
Jaboneta coordinated with Tzu Chi Foundation Zamboanga Coordinator Dr. Anton Lim how they can help the Layag-Layag kids go to school dry and faster. Together, they were able to gather and raise supports from families, friends, individuals, strangers, and organizations to build yellow colored boats which they called Pag-Asa (Hope). Aside from the yellow boats, they are now building a community center with library and training facility there. A Muslim mosque is also being planned since most of the residents are Islam believers.
The Bayaning Pilipino Awards is an annual search for modern-day heroes who make a difference in spite of their limitations.  Launched in 1995, it was envisioned by the late Don Eugenio Lopez, Jr. of ABS-CBN Network for which this award is now named, to give recognition to ordinary folks who had done heroic acts and extraordinary deeds.
The yearly Bayaning Pilipino Awards pay tribute to fine Filipino values of humanitarianism, industry, determination and dedication to public service. It is intended to hold in high public esteem “existing heroes who have rendered service to the Filipino people.”  “The heroes that we want to recognize now are those who are living and those whom the ordinary people can emulate, “ABS-CBN management stressed.”
According to Jaboneta, the P10,000 award will be used to start the Geny Lopez Jr. Mangrove Nursery at  Layag-Layag.
