The operation of the 16-megawatt generator set may result to a rise in power rates of about 11 centavos per kilowatt hour, according to an official of the Zamboanga City Electric Cooperative (Zamcelco).

The proposed rate increase was known during the recent Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC)  hearing on the acquisition of the 16-megawatt generator set by the Zamcelco.

The 11 centavo power hike was proposed by Zamcelco officials themselves.

Engr. Edgardo Ancheta, Zamcelco General Manager, said however that the rate increase had only been estimated and is still subject to evaluation and approval by the ERC.

Ancheta said that usually the computation proposed by Zamcelco is lower than that approved by the ERC.

At present, there is no problem with electricity supply coming from power generation companies.

Zamcelco’s power supply coming from generation companies amounts to 140 megawatts.  The city’s power demand is 110 megawatts per day.

The generator set will only be used by Zamcelco in times of power outages due to problem in the distribution lines.

Should the generator set be acquired, the electric cooperative will consistently pay the capital recovery, maintenance and operation fees even if the equipment is not used.

The generator set will be purchased from the National Electrification Administration (NEA) for P350-million payable in 15 years. (RGAAGo)
