An Abu Sayyaf sub-leader was allegedly among seven bandits who were killed during a firefight between government forces and Abu Sayyaf members in Patikul, Sulu.

A Marine sergeant was killed and  two other soldiers were also wounded during the encounter.

At least ten other persons reportedly voluntarily surrendered and were apprehended by authorities.

A report from the Western Mindanao Command said that several firearms ad military items were recovered in the area.

The same report said that prior to the incident, joint elements of the 62nd Marine Company of the Philippine Marine Ready Force Sulu under Col. Armel S. Tolato responded to reports received from Joint Task Force Sulu on sightings of Abu Sayyaf bandits in the area.

The Navy ship, BRP Juan Magluyan and BRP Waray, which serves as Command and Control Platform also proceeded to the encounter site with the Special Operations Platoon of the Marine Battalion Landing Team 1 for reinforcement, according to the report.

The miltary also sent an armed Philippine Navy helicopter augmented by a multi-purpose attack craft with a SEAL team.

The vessels patrolled the area to prevent the escape of the bandits.  (Remus Ong)
