In a bid to arrest the micronutrient deficiency among children including adults, the National Food Authority (NFA) introduces iron-fortified rice which can be availed of at a similar price as the NFA regular rice variety.

As this developed, Mayor Celso Lobregat has urged the NFA to intensify information dissemination campaign prior to infusion of the iron-fortified rice in the city’s market to ensure that people are properly informed of the benefits and effects of patronizing the new variety.

Remigio Samson, NFA Provincial Manager and overall in-charge of the Rice Fortification Program the other day met with Mayor Lobregat to discuss about the iron-fortified rice variety and the NFA’s intention to fully implement in Zamboanga, Republic Act 8976 also known as the Food Fortification program”.

While the NFA takes charge of the iron-fortified rice, other government agencies such as the Department of Health has also launched fortified products such as sugar, flour and milk—also in compliance to RA 8976.

The iron fortified rice program was launched March 15 nationwide and in Zamboanga City the launching venue was the Sta. Maria Central Elementary School.

After the launching activity, the NFA is set to inject iron-fortified rice products in the markets. However, an intensified advocacy is in place to get the people’s pulse in connection with the new product.

Iron-fortified rice products have been introduced in the country way back 2004 through the Food for School program where the Department of education purchases the product from the NFA at a much lower price and gives out the same to students for free to help solve the micronutrient deficiency in the country.

Studies show, Samsom said, Zamboanga City ranks number 2 in the region in terms of micronutrient deficiency, thus, the need to concentrate on the infusion of the ferrous sulfate products in the city.
