The dispute over the Spratly Islands re-emerges into public consciousness as recent reports of an increase in the number of China-owned structures being seen in the islands have many in the Asian region wondering actively once again: Who has right over the Spratly Islands? 

Multiple tug-of-war: Local and international perspectives on the Spratly issue is a symposium that aims to inform and rouse the interest of the general public on the issue of multiple sovereignty claims over the Spratlys. This event is open to the public and will be held on July 9th, 2011 (9:00 AM) at the Carlos Dominguez Conference Hall of Ateneo de Zamboanga University. The Ateneo Research Center (ARC) in partnership with the Social Development Council (SDC) and the Social Sciences Department of the Ateneo de Zamboanga University is sponsoring the symposium. Mr. Generoso Calogne, Senior Specialist Assistant to the Undersecretary for Policy of the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) will be the resource speaker.

The Spratly Islands is a set of more than 40 small islands in the South China Sea being claimed and/or is currently occupied by China, Vietnam, Malaysia, Taiwan, Brunei, and the Philippines. The area is believed to be rich in natural resources.
