31 youths, housewives join fish processing training PDF Print E-mail

A total 31 youths and housewives graduated from the 12-day comprehensive livelihood training on fish processing coducted by the Food Processor Association of Zamboanga (FPAZ) in partnership with USAID, EC, DepEd, TESDA and Education Quality and Access for Learning and Livelihood Skills Project (EQUALLS2) in Labuan last Saturday.

The graduates presented their finished products during a simple closing ceremony held at the Labuan Barangay Hall.
Mr. Alex Molas, Regional Program Officer of USAID-EQUALLS2 and EDC, was very impressed with the graduates’ active participation in such training as they participated successfully in the 12-day comprehensive livelihood training.

Molas also commended FPAZ under president Edsel Mari Acuña and vice president and hardworking Councilor Miguel “Mike” Alavar III of District 2, and other trainers.
“It is a solid accomplishment that service provider (FPAZ) have been a partner of EQUALLS2 program for the past two years. Based on what we have seen, we are so appreciative because aside from technical skills being given to the participants, there is also social preparation to mingle with other people and at the same time to face their future plans,” Molas said.

He added that the USAID, EDC and EQUALLS2 have the same goals as FPAZ’s to give livelihood to the indigents people by having them acquire knowledge from the free training in right processing and making local products.

Alavar congratulated the graduates for their successful participation and learning many things in processing of fish such as rellenong bangus, tortang bangus and Spanish style sardines.

Alavar added that since the very first day of training, he, Acuña and other trainers taught the students the proper hygiene such as the washing of hands before holding the fish.

Acuña, on the other hand, described the graduates as fast-learners as they followed all the instructions before applying it in actual processing.
Two of the graduates, Nur-in Kamja, the class president and Isniriya Adamaini who are both pregnant and housewives by occupation, said that they joined the livelihood training with the intention of learning the right way of processing fish to help their families.

“We learned the making of Spanish style sardine in corn oil and rellenong bangus. At first we were quite scared to do actual processing but with the good teaching and demonstration of our trainers especially Sir Acuña and Sir Alavar, we did it and we were successful,” said Kamja.

Kamja said that it was on July 1, 2011 when she was at the health center for pre-natal check-up when she learned that there was an ongoing free enrollment for the livelihood training. So she tried to become one of the students and was eventually given the chance to undergo the training.

“They are very professional, they were here rain or shine and we learned many things from them such as sanitation and hygiene up to cooking and packaging. We learned it from Acuña, Alavar and other trainers,” Kamja recalled.

Adamaini, who is also pregnant, said she learned making Spanish style sardines from labeling, packaging and cooking as well.
“In the training we have developed hidden skills in fish processing,” she added.

Meanwhile, Labuan Kagawad Don-Don Abarro thanked the FPAZ and their partners for conducting the free livelihood training in their place.
Abarro said that most of the participants came from poor families. He expressed confidence that their lives will imporve through the knowledge they acquired from the two-week long training.

Alavar and Acuña said that similar livelihood trainings will be held in other barangays like Zambowood, Tictapul, Lumayang and also in neighboring provinces and cities. — Dan Toribio Jr.
