The Muslim community in Zamboanga city is observing the Izra Wal Mi’Raj” or the Nocturnal Journey and Ascension of Prophet Mohammad, prompting the suspension of work and classes in the city.
The announcement was contained in a memorandum issued by the National Commission on Muslim Filipinos signed by its Officer-in-Charge Atty Yaser Apion last April 11.
The Izra Wal Mi’Raj is a recognized Muslim legal holiday under Presidential Decree No, 1083, otherwise known as the Code of Muslim Personal Laws in the Philippines.
Aside from Zamboanga city, Muslim holidays shall be observed in the provinces of Basilan, North Cotabato, Sultan Kudarat, Sulu, TAwi Tawi, Lanao del Norte, Lanao del Sur, Zamboanga del Norte and Zamboanga del Sur.
The holiday will also be observed in the cities of Cotabato, iligan, Marawi, Pagadian.
Isra and Mi-raj is observed on the 27th day of the month of Rajab under the Islamic calendar.
The day falls on April 24 this year.
The event marks the night that the prophet Mohammad was taken on a journey from Mecca to Jerusalem then on to Heaven by Allah. (LAJ)
