The Philippine Army’s 4th Special Forces Battalion together with the Save the Children of War, a non-government organization, spearheaded a medical mission catering to children of Ungkaya Pukan Basilan last Saturday.
The operation, “Operation Tuli,” was held at the Municipal Compound in Poblacion Ungkaya Pukan town.
Philippine Army Lt Col, Elmer Suderio said that the activity is annually conducted to cater to male children in the area.
Boys from 6 to 16 years old were spotted forming a line early that day to take advantage of free circumsicion services.
Some of the parents were also around to accompany their children to what is an accepted traditional ceremony marking the transition from boyhood to adulthood.
For her part, Dr Arlyn Jumao-as said that the operation is conducted every summer to provide time for the patient’s wound to heal.
Suderio expressed his gratitude to volunteer nurses from “Save the Children of War: Basilan Association” and the Junior Chamber Incorporated Lamitan City Chapter, in making the activity a success. (Ely Dumaboc)
