The Mindanao Railway System project is expected to start implementation next year, according to House Speaker Pantaleon Alvarez.

Funding will reportedly be allocated this year for right of way acquisition for areas where the train is expected to pass.

The first phase , scheduled to start next year, will include construction in areas where the trains will pass.

Initial plans include the following routes:  Davao del Sur to Davao del Norte to Butuan city, and on to Cagayan de Oro city.

Another route includes Cagayan de Oro city to Iligan to Zamboanga Peninsula with the loop to be completed from Cagayan de Oro city going to Cotabato, General Santos city and back to Davao.

The Mindanao Railway System is expected to improve connectivity among the different regions.

Improved connectivity is also expected to result to an improvement in the level of exchange among regions in terms of goods, products and people, according to Alvarez.
