The Abu Sayyaf barged into a Patikul elementary school Saturday dawn and took five Zamboaguenio painters hostage.

A companion of the victims made his daring escape by jumping from the building and running away from the crime scene, thus saving himself from being taken hostage by the group.

The victims were identified as Joel Adanza, Jung Guerrero, Momoy Ramos, Jayson Ramos and Jenly Miranda.

The victims were working as painters for a private contractor in Sulu and temporarily staying in the area.

All the victims however are residents of barangay Tumaga in Zamboanga city.

A police report said that the victims were asleep inside the Kampang Elementary School Sports Complex in barangay Bangkal Patikul Sulu when an undetermined number of armed men barged into the building at around 1:30am yesterday.

The armed men were reportedly looking for an Engineer Tingkahan.

One of the victims’ companions, Larry Velasquez, jumped and ran from the building towards the municipal hall where he was able to report the incident to authorities.

The victims however were taken by the armed men who fled towards an unknown direction.

In an interview, Velasquez’s father, Andy Velasquez expressed his relief when he learned that his son escaped from the group.

A father of one of the victims, who refused to be identified, said that kidnappers were asking for a ransom of P1-million for each of the victims.  (Ely Dumaboc)
