Mayor Beng Climaco has instructed the City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (CDRRMO) and the Office of the City Environment and Natural Resources (OCENR) to look into the upkeep of the Don Gregorio Memorial Elementary School (Don GEMS) covered court where families displaced by the Sept 1 Kasanyangan fire are temporarily housed.

The mayor likewise urged the CDRRMO and the City Social Welfare and Development Office (CSWDO) and the Kasanyangan Barangay Council to determine ways to fast track the transfer of the displaced families to another site so as not to hamper school operations.

She said the facility has to be regularly cleaned and spruced, as the evacuation center is located inside the school campus. “It’s no fault of the students and we thank the school as well as the community for accepting them (the fire victims) but as much as possible we should see to it that the upkeep of the area is maintained.”

According to the mayor, in cases like this, the barangays concerned are the ground commanders and are supposed to do the necessary coordination with the concerned agencies.

The stay of the affected families is only temporary and the transfer to either their permanent or temporary shelter should be done the soonest possible time, the mayor added.

The Don GEMS school principal the other day has expressed concern that the poor sanitation and cleanliness in the evacuation site is affecting the students and the school in general.  (Sheila Covarrubias/PR)
