The construction of a new Zamboanga City Jail building is expected to start by next month, Jail Warden Supt. Allan N.  Vargas disclosed yesterday.

Supt. Vargas said that the new site for the new jail building is in Barangay Talisayan , which has  a total land area of 6 hectares.

Vargas explained that the Bureau of Jail and Management Bureau (BJMP) and Zamboanga City Government will sign a Usufruct Agreement for the establishment of the new Zamboanga City Jail building. The building will cost P142. Million.

According to Vargas, there is an urgent need to transfer the Zamboanga City Jail to a new bigger building and area because it is already overcrowded. The minimum capacity of the jail is only 800 persons. But at present, inmates are 2,700. Out of the 2,700 inmates 300 are females. Vargas revealed that 60 percent of the inmates are facing drug charges.

Meanwhile, inmates of the Annex building was declared  as the champion  during the group dance competition  “ Showstopper Dance Competition”  yesterday morning dubbed as “ Satihan na City Jail Festival 2017” with the theme “  Kome Kita y Celebra Kunel Satti de Zamboanga “ and Satti Eat Together.

The activity is in line with the support of the BJMP to the Zamboanga Hermosa Festival.- Allen Abastillas
