The city government through the Housing and Land Management Division together with the National Housing Authority (NHA) is scheduled to evict the families who have been illegally occupying the housing units intended for families displaced by the 2013 siege.

Former city councilor now head of the City Housing Division Jawo Jimenez told the press briefing on Monday that letters or notices of eviction are now being readied against those occupying the housing projects under the Zamboanga City Roadmap to Recovery and Reconstruction (Z3R).

Jimenez said a substantial number of housing units have been occupied for quite a long time now by those who were not actually bona fide beneficiaries of the Z3R housing project, neither were they tagged nor found in the master list of beneficiaries.

He said the NHA and other agencies concerned were tapped to assist his office in the eviction process, especially in the identification of bona fide housing beneficiaries.

He lamented though that the problem on illegal housing settlers resulted from the beneficiaries’ unscrupulous activities to have their units sold or rented out to people, other than victims of the Zamboanga siege in 2013, thus depriving the internally displaced families of permanent shelters.

Compounding the problem, Jimenez said, there were some beneficiaries who, for reasons of their own, refused to occupy the units awarded to them, thus paving the way for other people to occupy the houses instead.

Nonetheless, he assured this problem will soon be addressed by his office together with the NHA and other agencies concerned.-(Vic Larato/PR)
