Classes in Zamboanga were suspended due to heavy rains which battered the city yesterday.

This as the city government remained on alert due to rainy weather brought about by typhoon Ompong and the southwest monsoon in the Zamboanga Peninsula.

The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) suspended trips of small vessels while trips to islands such as Sta. Cruz and Once Islas or the 11 Islands were prohibited.

Activities such as mountaineering, hiking, swimming in the beaches of Maasin and Bolong were prohibited.

The Philippine Coast Guard issued a warning last Wednesday to residents to prepare for heavy rains brought about by the typhoon.

In a press release from City Hall, Zamboanga Mayor Maria Isabelle Climaco- Salazar appealed for vigilance and advised continuous monitoring.

Climaco- Salazar also tasked the Barangay Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Committees to monitor the situation in their localities.  (Remus Ong)
